James was born in Kirkgunzeon, near Dumfries in 1955. He joined the Society after moving to Whitehaven in 2001. He works front of house. He is also the web designer for the Operatic Society.

During the early 1980's he appeared in cameo roles in several episodes of the cult sci-fi series 'Blakes 7' opposite Kevin Lloyd - who later became better known as Tosh Lyons in 'The Bill'. James' favourite shows are 'Cabaret' and 'H.M.S. Pinafore'.
